Betting for Benson began soon after the summer of 2005. Past band experiences caused lead singer and guitarist Ricky Kovacs to want to create something that he and others could be truly proud of. A call to fellow musician Mat Coxey confirmed that the idea would be worth pursuing, and the fall semester was spent writing and recording demos for the project, as well as figuring out who the remaining members would be. The position of drummer was easily filled by Brandon Coffey, a friend from their high school days in marching band, who had also played with Ricky for numerous gigs in the past. Andrew Richardson was an acquaintance of Ricky's and a pianist for their home parish, and soon fell into the mix as keyboardist for the group. Paul Veto later joined the group on guitar, and spent a lot of time that year working on material as well, but later complications with distance and transportation led to a mutual agreement that it was too difficult to include him in the group.
The summer of 2006 came, and the group had much material to filter through before deciding which cuts would make the album. Most of May was spent finishing up lyrics and arranging the music. The final 13 cuts were decided upon, and on June 8, 2006, the band headed to Nashville, TN to begin recording their debut album. That weekend, all drums and percussion parts were tracked, and though it proved to be a hefty task for Coffey, he got through it with very few takes and impressed everyone. It was a very creative and productive weekend, and getting those parts out of the way made the rest of the recording process seem that much easier. Back in Asheville, the band gathered all their gear and set up in their new location at Generation Trail Studios to record the remainder of the album.
The band had their first gig at the beginning of July at a local venue. The turnout was good and went about as well as a first gig could go. The name was finally voted upon towards the end of July. They went through options such as “Kingdoms Against Them” and “One String Short,” but in the end the group decided upon “Betting for Benson.” With the name established and the first gig past, the band dug in and Mat and Ricky set a due date for tracking to be finished by July 23rd. The group brought Mat Payne on board in the final weeks to do solos for the album, and ended up adding him to the roster.
The last week went quite leisurely, as the band wrote and tracked the Intro and Interlude and tied up loose ends. The deadline was met and the remaining 2-3 weeks were spent in Studio B mixing the audio. Album art was created and photo shoots took place in the remaining weeks, and the final deadline for the finished product was beaten by 2 days (August 15). The finished album, entitled “Forever Tomorrow”, was sent off to CRT Custom Products in Nashville for production, and was released September 1st, 2006.
The band was busy recording over Christmas break of 2006 as well, and is planning on releasing a new EP by the summer of 2007. They were voted #2 in the Star 104.3 Battle of the Bands and won the chance to perform for the entire city of Asheville for the New Years Eve Downtown Countdown '06. Although the concert got rained out, they are working with the city to to play for the July 4th festivities instead.
On January 6th, 2007, Betting for Benson organized and performed a show working to raise funds for the Theater program at North Buncombe High School. They felt the need to give back to their school (of which 4 of 5 of the members are alumni) for everything that NB High had given to them. B4B also invited local artists Chad Mackey and Agent X to open for the occasion. The concert was a huge success and raised nearly $1000 for the school. The band is currently still recording material for the new EP and lining up shows for the summer. They are also considering record deals, but more importantly continuing to do the one thing they all love: creating music.
